On the occasion of the UN Security Council meeting for the renewal of MINURSO mandate, the representative of the Polisario Front to the United Nations, Mr. Sidi Omar, made a statement in which he asked the members of the Council to take action, not words in order to end the status quo.
Sidi Omar indicated that « Although the session will take place at a time when the world is facing the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic, we hope the Security Council will take concrete steps to change the status quo and revive the stalled peace process in Western Sahara ».
« We also hope the Council will send a strong message to Morocco, the occuping power, to end its illegal and destabilising actions in the Sahrawi occupied territories », he said.
The sahrawi diplomat pointed that « what our people expect from the United Nations and from the Security Council in particular is actions, not words, actions that would enable them to exercise freely and democratically their inalienable right to self-determination and independence ».
« The upcoming meeting is therefore another opportunity for the Council to go beyond « business as usual » and to demonstrate its resolve to put an end to the decades-long conflict in Western Sahara and with it the suffering of our people », he concluded.
